1. Defence - The first duty of Government is defence of the realm.
2. Individual liberty - The Government must uphold the freedom of the individual. IE humans rights including the right not to believe in religion or supernatural beings. This category would also include the freedom from crime against the individual, IE law and order.
3. Economy - The Government must understand how to maintain a growing economy with full employment and increasing per ca pita income etc etc. This means a free market economy.
4. The Environment - including transport and communications,
including Agriculture and fisheries.
5. Science and Technology - This would include Health care and
good Science Education ie no anti-science teaching in the education system.

Texan, ...well, American will have to do.

1. Sort out Immigration, and don't fear the repercussions
2. Pull so far out of Iraq that our troops will be closer to Mars than the middle east.
3. Leave the UN and NATO. They are relics of the Cold war.
4. Shrink the size of the federal government.

Empathy first, then ability.
Who knows what choices tomorrow will bring, or who has the best solutions. As long as they are sympathetic and clever, I don't mind differing with them occasionally.
I do have a handful of lines in the sand, but they are the obvious ones. Negative or hateful views for instance.
That's why I seldom vote.
Only a handful of politicians have had these qualities in my lifetime.

There is a very thin line between the two major parties, so the only thing that influences my vote (which I always cast) is my very long memory of growing up in the 70's and entering adult hood under a Thatcherite state.

I look for traditional values in the candidates. My next criteria is " who will best feather MY nest!" Hey, its the American way! "Are you better off than you were 4 years ago?" Ronald Reagan
