Are religion and politics the greatest evils we have to face in todays age,In the past it was the cold war and nuclear weapons.

Religion is not an evil, it's a blessing. It's the people who wrongly use religion to harm other people. This is initiated by politics......look at the 'christian' Bush who kills for his own benefit. Look at the extremist islam leaders who do the same to ensure their own power....Didn't Hitler do the same, and Stalin etc. So we should fear Politics and Politicians, not religion...

Politics is the greatest threat, but nuclear weapons are still a treat. Who has the most nukes? The United States.

Yes and no but you are right... the combination of the two is the answer to your question.

About 8 months ago, I was up late and ran across this interview with an older gentleman named Arthur Schlenger(spelling off on the last name). I had no clue who he was and he was in his 90s but it caught my eye because he was talking about this subject.

Long story short, he was a famous author who was predicting, and he said this outright, over the next 100 years we were going to see an incredible movement toward religion and politics combining.

I think we are already seeing this, even here.

Politics is a necessary evil. On it's own, political struggle can be a force for (good) change.
when it is mixed with religion it is a vile thing, giving both a power greater than the mere sum of their parts.

{edit} to the person who said our laws are rooted in religious laws - thank goodness that is completely wrong. You just have to look at the injustices of sharia law to see what a world based on theistic law is like (shudder)

I dred to think how many people have perished due to the combined efforts of Religion and Politics. On the same hand, I wonder how much more crowded the world would be .... if full of life rather than resentment.

..Religion and Politics often gives way
...to ranting and raving and carrying on
....like emotional children, I'm sure you'll agree
..Not long ago I was going to listen
...to all of the people who were up for election
....but all that they said was invective and
.....personal crap that had nothing to do with
.the substanitive problems of running a government
Which is all true, as you've heard for yourself,
..if you've listend to all of the so called
...debates of the candidates, anyway,
....right in the middle, someone got up
.....and said, Why don't you go live in Russia
......or China, if that was the way that you felt
.......'bout the United States of America!!!
..I tried to rebut him by asking if he was
...making a statement of facts as he knew them,
....and where was his documentation to back up
.....his claim?..I think Socrates would have
......been proud of the way I rebutted his facts
.......but all he could offer, by way of rebuttal
........was more of the same, he repeated the part
.........about Russia and China..and threw in
..........some parts about Communist Dupes!!
...........Someone said, Son of a *****!! and
...........That Dirty *******!! I couldn't be sure
.............(it was all so confusing!!)
.So we all beat the **** out of Mr. Conservative!
..And, after all, he has only himself to be blamed
...this is still a free country, and anyone
....telling a fellow like me, that I'm full
.....of ****!! Had best be prepared, to answer
......politely, when asked if he'd care to say WHY
