This is a loaded question so let's try to look at the benefits from both sides.

1. Pakistan shot it down
= they get to be seen as doing more against terrorism during a time they are being accused of letting terrorists run free

2. USA shot it down
= the USA can let Pakistan take the credit and reap the gains against terrorism while also sending a signal to Pakistan that 'they are watching them'.

My opinion is that it was a set up for political gains.

As far as your 'fair trial'comments... honey, you sound exactly like me a few years ago. I have no clue what has happened to that concept. We have evolved into a new era of kill first and ask questions later... sad day for humanity.

well pakistan is currently under pressure from america and its allies regarding the 'war on terror'.. the afghan govt likes to play blame games with pakistan and people are only happy at pointing fingers at pakistan for 'supporting terrorism'... u can even c statements from certain quarters appearing in many newspapers worldwide about some so-called al-qaeda member taking refuge in some house in the FATA area...!!

president musharraf is a person who likes to please bush...

those attacks were definitely backed by the us - directly or indirectly - to thwart some 'al-qaeda' operatives in the region on some so-called 'tip-off' to the intelligence...

they victimized 30 children and 50 adults who were absolutely innocent.. that's the reason why opposition benches have taken a severe stance against the ruling party and asked them several times to stop the military-politics and use peaceful means..

it must also be noted that a local tribal council in that region had voted and signed on a peace accord with the federation only days back and surrendered their arms!

the opposition benches have voted on no-confidence votes against the prime minister, president and the ruling party many times at the senate and national assembly levels but the govt has been successful in avoiding them smartly...

many people now widely believe that america is now strongly involved with the govt and military of pakistan and are skeptic of the outcome of this 'dictatorship'...

lets just hope we dont see any more insane stuff from our govt anymore..

Haven't seen any evidence yet to prove that they were terrorists. Neither have I seen any evidence to prove that they weren't.
Case open.
