There's three things I would like to cover.
1) Vampires are supposedly afraid to garlic, not onions.
2) Correct English is 'Why are vampires afraid of garlic?', English is my fourth language, I'm surprised at your grammar, or lack thereof.
3) Finally, to answer your question, they aren't. If you want to figure it out, ask some Chinese myth expert, because that's where the myth came from. After I found that garlic did not work, I lost interest, if you want to strike fear in a vampire, stick a skewer in their eyeball, that works very well.

Its not onions, its garlic they are afraid of. oops I ended in a preposition, oh well teachers not here now. Yahoo sometimes I think there's just a staff sitting around making these questions up.

as Onions are of the same species as Garlic they may work but not as effectively as Garlic does.Might be the Sulfer content in them.any way after stuffing their mouths with garlic its a good idea to lop off their heads to kill them.

it was garlic not onions that Bram Stoker ADDED to combat Dracula! He made up a LOT of things!

because garlic and onions contain sulphur whic can cause serious throat infections to vampires...so they r not able to feed..
