Nice one, Grist from America '...been to England, felt at home in London'. It indeed may be the capital, but if all Americans think London is a sure sign of what England (and Britain as a whole...which I believe was part of the question) is, then they are misguided - don't worry...most of us Brits think anywhere other than New York/Miami/Los Angeles is not worth the trip.
Despite being half West Indian (mum) and half Scottish (dad), lived in Norwich, East Anglia for most of my life...that's 122 miles North East of your favourite city, Grist...find that there are different attitudes to being British nowadays. Some will still nostalgically hark back to what they see as better times '...you could leave your front door open and not worry about your wee bairns being chatted up by a 50 year old pervert - etc.', and others will display an attitude of cynicism, basically about politicians. The 'influx' (a good Daily Mail word) of immigrants since 1948 has also given most of us reason to turn within ourselves and damn everyone else. Organisations we used to respect - police and prisons only to name two - are now developing into jokes...and Grist - just one for you, our current leader has seen President Bush more times in five years than I saw my mother in her last 25.
British people possess a great deal of maturity and thought to read between the lines...but despite our complaints and comments to the people who supposed to matter, we now realise even that has become criminalised, and thus do not know where we ought to go next. We've been bludgeoned by people we once saw as our guardians, hence our sneers at 'foreigners' who decided to come here...we can't complain to our Members of Parliament any more (well, we can but will not be taken seriously), and so will unload our vexation on poor bastards who don't have harm or hate their hearts...they just want to make their lives better.
Just like most of us did so many years ago.

From US, with Scottish and English ancestors, Burke's Peerage types. lords of castles and all that. Been to England, felt at home in London, mistaken for English until I talked. Could see there's a bit more of a class system than in US, but otherwise felt at home. Food was OK - French food actually worse - Italian and Spanish food better. Can't fault a country that brought us Shakespeare, Darwin, Hume. Felt England best civilized of all Europe that I have visited, yet I can't be objective, having been raised by Anglophiles.
Have had military experience, regard British as best to have my back in battle.

British people do not exist.
The English, Irish, Scottish and Welsh are all very different from each other.

I am from Singapore, just got back from uk a month ago. Some of them can be very friendly, some are very rude and snobby. And overall I think they eat very unhealthily. Or yea and their british humor....'ha ha'.
