When you were young, and you heard a sound, did you have to convert it to the sound of your instrument before you can identify it? I have to convert the sound into a piano sound before I can identify it, but my father does not. I'm thinking that after a while you start to be able to identify notes without needing to convert the sound. Is this true?

Very few people have what is called " perfect pitch". Many musicians have "relative pitch". This is usually accomplished by playing an instrument, or singing in a specific key often. The idea of labeling a note directly relates back to music notation, and usually, a lot of practice.
