the simpson's springfield seems to be in illinois; this educated guess is based on the idea that in the show they have shelbyville and springfield always competing against each other as to which city is better.

i always took what i thought was an educated guess in saying that it was in illinois but it loooks like wikipedia has proven me wrong.

hahaha... i have to give a kudos to everyone who pitched in with this wiki. =)

The uncertain location of Springfield is a long-running joke in the series, based on the fact that 34 states in the United States have at least one community with that name (several have more than one). Episodes frequently make fun of the fact that Springfield's state has never been revealed, by adding further conflicting descriptions, obscuring onscreen map representations, and interrupting conversational references. In actuality, the exact geographic location (and geographic features) of Springfield is probably best described as wherever (and whatever) suits the writers for a particular episode the best. It is perhaps best to say that the fictional Springfield is set in a fictional state with an exact location in the United States which will vary from episode to episode.

A Reasonable Conclusion? (it's a running joke, must we spoil it?)

Springfield as a city (and its state), do not actually exist; rather, Springfield and its incisively observed cross-section of people may be seen as an allegory of The United States itself as a whole. Springfield, in fact, encompasses all of modern America. This is supported by the reference to the city as "Springfield, USA" in one episode, which shows its broad application over the entire United States. As a metaphor it thus travels around the states, pushing geopolitical localities off to replace them for the episode or such. It's a wandering state which makes it in effect "Not Just Another State".

Matt Groening, the creator of the Simpsons, was asked the same question. He said it wasn't a real city. The people are a cross-section of the American people. The name is only called Springfield because it's the most common name for an American city. About 3/4 of all the U.S. states have a city called Springfield.

there is no state. they have hinted at several states, just to throw you off. Actually, there was an episode of Who Wants to be a Millionare? and one of the questions was "Where are The Simpsons from?" and the answer was Springfield, USA.

No one actually knows. Matt Groening ( the producer) keeps that a secret from everyone. In one episode lisa says Springfield Missouri is 2000 miles away so it cannot be Illinois.

The Simpson's are from Kentucky. The best episode to document this is an episode called "behind the laughter" at the very beginning of the episode it tells that there from Northern Kentucky.
