I know Christmas is about giving gifts. But, why do parents go overboard. I don't have any children of my own, but I have a niece and a nephew. The last few years they got so many toys that they literally got bored and overwhelmed opening them.

It has to do with society today; the way our society today has morphed into is a reflection of our children and ourselves. The reason why kids get these things and keep getting them is because of parents. Young people have children and are not ready to be parents so they keep doing what they are doing. Kids are taking control of the household because they know they can get anything they want. These parents will do anything to make sure the kids are not in there way by pleasing them. The way society has morphed today has brainwashed everybody in believing everything is materialistic. By buying the most things at the most expensive prices makes people believe they are special. It does not! It actually makes you stupid.

And that is just what will happen everytime when children are bombarded with too much anything. So this x-mas buy them a refrigerator box and watch the fun ensue.Parents go overboard for many reasons, some just really dont know how to raise children, economically well to do, don't know what moderation is, sometimes parents even buy stuff they want to play with, compensation on many levels. I find that parents who do this have problems in disciplining their children too.

I think a lot of people do it in fear of the kids hating them for not getting what they want. Kids today are just so materialistic and over obsessed with money and expensive things. My nephews went shopping with thier dad about a week ago to get their halloween costumes. they saw the same exact costumes at walmart that were $20 cheaper than where my brother got their costumes but the kids wanted the ones that were more expensive even though they were exactly the same as the cheaper ones. The cheaper ones even came with face paint but they didn't care. I just don't get why parents actually get their kids almost everything they want for Christmas. It just shows kids that "oh I can do whatever I want and I'm still going to get what I want. I can be a spoiled brat"

I tend to buy my children too much for Christmas. My children are not spoiled. When I was little my parents never had any money for presents and I am fortunate that I do, so why not make one day special for them. I thank god for that.

Gives them someone to talk about during the following year..... Like isn't that little Jeremy spoiled rotten, its because he has everything..... and so on.... I don't do Christmas anymore because of the materialism.

Are the kids "spoiled" or did they just get too many things? Spoiled is more of a "kicking and screaming if you don't get your own way" thing isn't it?

usually a parent is trying to impress, win favor, and often fulfilling wishes that were not fulfilled for them as children.

You're right. This Christmas, don't buy them anything - they'll love you for it.
