Shinola is a thick paste wax for shoes that is sold in a round can that's about 1/2 inch high. The expression means that the person has no common sense or is pretty low in the IQ department.

This is conjecture but it possibly came into use in the military where shined boots were mandatory more than 60 yrs ago to pass inspection. A raw recruit who had never had a new pair of shoes may have been given an empty can of Shinola with $hit in it and told to "Put a spit shine on them." The result would have been hilarious to the other experienced soldiers.

Even if they would have won I still would have had a few teams ranked ahead of them based solely on talent. If you looked at the Steelers of the 70', the 49ers of the 80's, and The Cowboys of the 90's, those teams were stacked with Hall of Famers on both offense and defense and I would take those teams over this Patriots team where the rules are slightly different and the competition is more watered down due to expansion.

Shinola (not sure of spelling) was a brand name of shoe polish. So if you didn't know it from fecal matter, your shoes would smell horrible. If you don't know the difference, then, you are major stupid.

It's a pretty old expression, because I have not seen a can of Shinola since I was a child.

It is an idomatic expression meaning that the person about whom the speaker is speaking knows nothing or very little.

"you don't know *hit from Shinola, you certainly know what *hit is, Shinola is (or was) a shoe polish, so you don't know ***** from shoe polish - "you are very stupid."
