I am just starting out so cost is important but it is my shop window so needs to be very good. Any ideas on good companies and what it might cost?

That totally depends on what type of package you want! For instance, you can have them build and host your site and take care of it which will cost you a monthly fee, you can have them build it and you take care of it....too many variables here!

I'd suggest doing more searching on the web, looking for "e-commerce web site design", taking a close look at designers' portfolios (look at look/feel, user friendliness, dynamic, not simple HTML, experienced), looking for services bundled/offered (maintenance, shopping cart solution, security for shopping, hosting, etc.), requesting quotes if price is not available, and compare them.

No offense, but visiting www.artdivision.co.uk recommended above definitely does NOT strike me as the best solution. Those sites seem so simple (layout and coding-wise).

To sum up, take some time to compare!

Try these
http://www.transeuroarts.com
They specialise in arts organisations but they often do start up business sites such as you need. They charge £250 for the start up site and they can get you up and running in a matter of days. They also host your domain and generally make life easy for you! Because they are all artists, you get a really interesting site - different to some of the template designs that lots of web designers use.

Good luck!

Take a look at www.audleypublications.co.uk
10 page website, you're looking at £250.00 plus hosting fees which I reckon 1&1 are the best for.
Email me through the site if interested
