The Lord of The Rings live action movies that have come out so far are in Chronological order, but there are two books set in Middle Earth that Tolkein also wrote, which have not been made into live action movies. The Hobbit, prequel to the Lord Of the Rings has been made into a cartoon movie (as have The Fellowship of the Ring, The Two Towers, and Return of the King, although the last three animated movies are much harder to find since they received a lot less attention in the media). The Silmarillion is a prequel to The Hobbit, and has never been adapted to film in any form (and, considering it is the longest book in the series, probably never will be confined into the space of one single movie). MGM Studios is trying to produce a live action movie of The Hobbit, and if this happens, the Films will no longer be in chronological order.

sort of. the trilogy of films is in chronological order. however, the prequel to the films is the book "the hobbit" which mgm is trying to secure the rights to to open up a whole set of other movies. ian mckellan has expressed an interest in returning to these movies as gandalf the grey, but who knows how long it would be before rights are secured and they go into production. peter jackson has been tapped for the director if the rights are secured.

Yes they were made and released in the same order the books were wrote and published. There is the occasional flashback in both film and books but the main plot is on a straight timeline

Well, there's "The Hobbit " which is about how Bilbo gets the ring from Gollum, but they didn't make that one. You can always read the book though. But yes, the movies are in chronoligical order. Don't let that scene in the third flick with Smeagal turning into Gollum confuse you. It was Gollums memory.(flashback)

As they relate to themselves. They are actually three parts of the same story. As they relate to the Hobbit it is prequel to the story so it will be out of sequence chronologically, but; in sequence according to when the books were released.
