By all means DEMAND it back. Go back to the second computer store that fixed it and ask them for a detailed letter that says what they did to fix it. Take in your invoice from that shop and go to the rip off shop. Tell them that the 40$ you paid was paid for diagnosis and they wrongly diagnosed your problem. If they refuse, tell them you will be in touch with the fraud division of the States Attorneys office for your state and the better business bureau. If you happen to be a minor. They have to give youa refund. As a minor you can not legally enter into any contract. Do not take no for an answer. If they do give it back, follow up with BBB and States Attorney anyway. Businesses will stop taking advantage if more people excercised their rights. GOOD LUCK

That is a very tough question.
I repair computers for a living. If a customer comes to me and I can't repair it, I don't charge. however i charge between £35.00 and £100 for a service.
However if i have to spend out money attempting to fix the computer, i request the money to me re-imbursed.
In your shoes, i would go back to the store and "ASK" for your money back as you were given bad advice. BUT you will have no case to take the proprietor to court.
I hope this is helpfull

I would take the computer into them again and see what they say! Then when they suggest it again plug it in and show them it works! Also have a friend record this too. Then report them to the Better Business Bureau, $40.00 to dispose of a bad motherboard? Kinda sounds funny to me!

I would dam sure tell them to make amends with you and if they dont, contact the local Better Business Bureau and file a complaint! You may not get your money back but it will give them a bad checkmark on their business and may even pay you back just to get the mark removed!

Yes. A lot of computer places will try to rip you off like that. Don't just go along with it or they will keep doing it to people.

yes ask for your money back. The reason why they wanted you to pitch is, so they can reuse it or sell it to someone else. They probably knew it just needed reset.
