I can understand why youngsters don't understand and accept the advice of elders. The following could be the reasons:
1. The people who give advice have not proven their authority or are themselves not perfect in view of the young ones.
2. Life is a system of progressive compromise. A youngester will be in mindset for less compromise whereas a old one will compromise things broadly.
3. At twenties we think we are immortal and anything is achievable.
4. Most of the time, the people who give advice don't try to understand the views of the youngsters and the youngster thinks the others are always forbidding them from doing things.
5. The old ones also should leave it to the youngsters and let them learn by their own - after all, how much height can you support one to climb a tree - after some point they themself have to try and climb.

I can't generalize for all adolescents, but when i was a teenager...i remember distinctly, just wanting to strike out on my own, to not have to depend so much on my parents.

I really respected their love and kindness, but felt smothered...and felt this drive to discover myself. I think this behaviour isn't unhealthy...it's like a bird spreading his wings and learning to fly. If the parents shelter the children too much, they never leave, and actually become quite odd i might even say ;-)

Having said all of that however, i think there's room for improvement - and i think the family unit really needs more parent/children guidance. Not guidance for just things like education, sports, money...but something more meaningful, guidance for life, socializing, ethics, morality.

People talk about family values alot, but i don't think many parents actually guide their kids morally. I think if parents nurture their children to be really caring and compassionate people, when they are teenagers, despite the raging hormones, they will maintain a good relationship and overview.

I think a lot of young people consider their parents and certainly elderly people out of touch with their generation's pressures and obstacles. They aren't likely to take the advice of their elders if it's offered freely. Many young people are convinced they know what's best for them and discount the wisdom of people who have made mistakes before them. I don't think it's a bad thing. We learn best when we make mistakes ourselves or witness others making them first-hand. People can't live their lives through the experiences of others; we need to have our own, and that means erring and learning from those errors.
