Because these things were decided on different days of the week, and they didn't really get clear heads until the weekend:

Monday:
One, eleven, ten.

Tuesday:
Two, twelve, twenty.

Wednesday:
Three, thirteen, thirty.

Thursday:
Four, fourteen, forty.

Friday:
Five, fifteen, fifty.

Saturday:
Six, sixteen, sixty..........Yahoo!

Sunday:
Seven, seventeen, seventy.......

No particular reason. That's just the way it is - another irregularity in the colourful English language.

That's a very good question! English is an irregular language and its spelling is not always logical.
