First of all, you are lucky to see anything at all after looking directly at the sun. The UV radiation burns your eyes, and just like a sunburn, the pain doesn't come until it's too late to reverse the damage.

As to the seeing of colors, try this experiment in normal lighting. Stare at something red for a short time and then close your eyes. You will see a green image of the same shape. similarly blue causes an orange "after-image" and yellow causes a purple "after-image". These are called complimentary colors, and for a short while after looking at anything, your eyes send your brain a complimentary afterimage. Biologists can probably explain this phenomena better.

You eyes adjusted to the brightness of the sun while you were looking at it. When you look away from the sun, the intensity of the light decreases a lot. you see colors as a result of your eyes adjusting back to the amount of light.

the same thing happens when you stand outside (during a sunny day) then suddenly enter a room with closed curtains and very little light.

When you look at the sun, the light causes the cones and rods in your eyes to signal the brain that they are being stimulated. Since the sun is so bright, this over stimulates these cones and rods. Because of this over stimulation, these cones and rods continue to signal the brain that they are seeing light when they are not (this could be considered damage, but if you only looked at the sun for a small amount of time it will get better). This also happens when you look at a bright lamp or fire or anything of that nature.

On the retina there are cells rods and cones that help you see colors. When you see a very bright light, these cells are activated to help you perceive the image.
Once your eye changes focus from very bright light source to low intensity source, it takes some time for the cells in the retina to adapt to new source. During this time, you can see either colors or darkness depending upon how much you have gazed at the sun :)

The reason is that the sun hurt your eyes and you should not do that anymore or you will go blind. Looking at the sun will make anyone blind. Don't look at sun anymore. You should go see a eye doctor to make sure you didn't damage you eye anymore.

has nobody told you that looking at the sun is very dangerous and could make you blind or at the least damage your eyes?

the white light of the sun dispers colours better. if you look at any strong white light you will see colours.
