It will probably happen someday, but it could be a long time. It's one of the tougher records out there - it's been over 30 years since anyone has even made it to 40 games. As to who could do it - there are a number in the majors who could manage it - Ichiro, Pujols, Mauer, and probably half a dozen others have the ability. Hitting streaks that long are in large part a statistical fluke - even if you're a .400 hitter, there's only about a 1 in 2500 chance that you'll go 56 straight games with at least one hit.

After Dimaggio was stopped by some great plays by Ken Keltner, he went on another 18 game streak, making it 74 out of 75. 1941 was also the last time anyone hit .400, done by Ted Williams.

Mickey Mantle is right but did you know that after the streak was broken, Joe D started another the next day and that one ran for 16 more games (not 18)!! The same year Ted Williams hit .406 (last time it's been done) and yet Joe D won league MVP.
