in terms of revenue, it's far and away football. football and major men's basketball are the only revenue producing sports. at some schools, basketball produces 90+% of the athletic department's revenue. football produces far more money, but the expenses are also incredibly high. there aren't actually a lot of football schools that make money. you have a stadium that you either built and maintain or else you pay to rent one. then you have 85 scholarships for the team and 85 women's scholarships. all the jerseys and equipment, the video equipment, the training and coaching staff, travel expenses, extra tutors. the Big 12 schools all spend between $6.8 and $15.3 million per year. for the schools that focus on basketball, percentage-wise they are probably the most profitable.

Football. Many Universities football revenue pays for a majority of the other sports.

Basic example:

15 Home Basketball games @$25 ticket with 15,000 fans =$5,625,000

7 Home football games @$40 ticket with 85,000 fans = $23,800,000

Also - TV and Bowl revenues are higher than March Madness.

There is a reason the BCS is around... MONEY!
