These areas should be sterile. The only "internal" organs which are not sterile are the gut, which is an extension of the outside environment - ie it is open to the outside via mouth, GI tract etc, right through to anus.

labscimaster is right... everything internal should be sterile... its only the gut that has flora necessary for efficient digestion etc
