Try the master of the macbre- Edgar Allen Poe. Afterall it is Halloween. I forget the title of the one with the heart under the floorboards. Was it The Falcon? I don't think so but, check him out. Most short stories are a little longer than that. Look up Dorothy Parker, Virginia Wolfe and Sylvia Platte. You need to go to the library. The magazine "The New Yorker" was the best source for new authors of American Short Stories, years ago. Perhaps it still is. One of my favorite collections of short stories when I was in college was entitled "Crazy like a Fox.' by SJ Perelman. He was a fabulous humorist. Mark Twain and Will Rogers fall in to that same realm. I hope you aren't writing a paper for tomorrow because you really do need to go to the library and look up these authors and publications. For more modern writers why not try any of the "Chicken Soup for the Soul" books in the series. There is also a semi-religous publication out with rather simple writing techniques (similar to readers digest) called "Guideposts" and every issue is a collection of short stories. They combine the magazines at the end of each year and publish a book called "Dailey Guideposts." One of my favorite southern short story authors is Lewis Grizzard. Try "Elvis is Dead and I don't feel so good myself." or "Chili Dawgs only Bark at Night."His last collection before his untimely death is entitled "It Wasn't Always Easy, but I Sure Had Fun" Did I mention some of these favorites..."Thurber Country" by James Thurber. "The Short Stories of Ernest Hemingway" and of course the master of mystery "The Complete Short Stories of Sherlock Holmes" by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. I am glad that you asked this question because it has been ages since I have gone through my own personal library, which my daughter took over a few years ago. Thanks for the reminder and remember what we absorb in our environment, in particularly through reading, becomes a part of who we truely are and can help to make the world a better place. "Knowledge is power!" Keep reading!

"Everyday Use" by Alice Walker. Perhaps four pages long, both funny and sad. Very good one.

And hey hey, I found it online! http://xroads.virginia.edu/~ug97/quilt/walker.html

Not sure of the original book it was published it, but it's been put into a compilation of the same title recently.
