Would copying a definition from Wikipedia and publishing it on my website be illegal? I don't fully understand the whole GNU distribution thing. I would of course link back to the definition on wikipedia, but I would prefer to keep users on my own website instead of making them go to wikipedia to read the definition.

You have to attribute Wikipedia for anything you copy off their site. If it is in the public domain, then do not worry. Usually all media from Wikipedia will tell you what license covers what. You must also provide a copy of the license, and a notice saying that the license covers what you have copied.

If you are just using a quote from Wikipedia, for say an essay, then a reference in a bibliography is all that is required, so long as it is of some academic format.

"...
Important note: The Wikimedia Foundation does not own copyright on Wikipedia article texts and illustrations. It is therefore useless to email our contact addresses asking for permission to reproduce content.

The license Wikipedia uses grants free access to our content in the same sense as free software is licensed freely. This principle is known as copyleft. That is to say, Wikipedia content can be copied, modified, and redistributed so long as the new version grants the same freedoms to others and acknowledges the authors of the Wikipedia article used (a direct link back to the article satisfies our author credit requirement). Wikipedia articles therefore will remain free forever and can be used by anybody subject to certain restrictions, most of which serve to ensure that freedom.

Wikipedia is public domain as the info is added by members of the public.

But if you copy it you will need to make it clear where you got it from

Some material is copyrighted and some is not. Scroll down and it should tell you. There is usually a long box that indicates whether or not the material is copyrighted.
