Globalisation is the process where countries increasingly interact with other countries. There is more trade, investment, immigration, exchange of cultures etc. The global economy simply describes the all the exchange of factors of production (land, labour, capital, enterprise) between countries, not just within one.

A country can be competitive in a global market place by being able to produce something more productively (i.e.: better quality, and/or more of them per single input) than other countries.

Globalisation affects a country's balance of payments if by having access to new markets and sources of imports the country ends up exporting or importing more than before.
