society has absolutely gone cold, but it's been that way for a very long time. cynicism is the no. 1 corrosive agent in terms of interpersonal relations, and we're living in the Age of Snarkiness, Knowitalldom and Cynical Ridicule, so i think it's no surprise that coldness and cruelty follows.
of course, i'm a very serious and devout cynic, so i admit i am guilty of spreading pessimism and contempt. but damn, it's a lot of fun.

I'm afraid the world has always been cold, not just recently. While ideals of beauty have changed throughout history, society has always focused on outward appearance. People can be superficial, cold, heartless and cruel. I think cruelty is the most unforgiveable thing. I've seen it. I've been a victim of it. I was picked on as a child. I used to be called ugly. It hurt. Years later it still hurt, even though strangers started complimenting me & asking if I was a model (& I even became a model). The emotional scars never completely heal.
To attack someone vulnerable, to tear someone apart just because they're different from the "norm" is detestable. I came to realize eventually however that I'd rather be exceptional, unique, extraordinary. I'd rather stand out than fit in. I was picked on because I was different. I was poor & couldn't afford to wear designer clothes. I was also sensitive, shy & smart (unforgiveable sins in junior high!) Many people are so desperate to "fit in," to "appear cool" that they will do whatever it takes, even hurting others. Maybe putting others down is a way to elevate their own tenuous sense of self-esteem. Adolescence is an insecure time for everyone. Some use aggression to deal with it. Anyone different is seen as a threat and is used as a scapegoat.
People who are truly beautiful inside, who are sensitive, creative, intelligent are often torn apart by the masses who either don't understand, are frightened by or are envious of these special people.
Everyone I've ever really admired (artists, writers, musicians etc) didn't quite "fit in." The underdogs, the people on the fringes are the true heroes. The important thing is not to let the cold world destroy you. Many beautiful, fragile people succumb to the sadness of having of heart in a heartless world. Love yourself. Realize there are still good people out there. Even if we're not the majority. Don't let the ******* get you down!
Misfit power!!! :)

In my opinion the world has NOT gone cold. Do not let the media portray what the world truely is. Look more around at what is in your community. Take a week off from all media - no TV, no cable, no newspapers, no internet, and see what is around in your world. And do not be bias and let all the stuff you see be what you judge to be bad. Like some parent yelling at their kid in the hallway at school. You could say that is bad, but what if it is that the parent really loves his/her kid and is trying his/her best to help him/her out. Your perception of the world can change in a second. Ever fall in love? How all of sudden the world is a fantastic place to be in because that one person is in it. The world has not changed, but your perception has. When I think the world is cold and heartless, maybe I need to look at myself. Am I being cold and heartless? Do I just look at what is going on and become more cold inside, and use the excuse that there is nothing I can do? Do I contribute to this coldness and heartless? Sitting back and watching it and judging it will contribute to it. Or can I fall in love with life and the world and focus on making it better?
The coolness in being cruel is portrayed in the media. Gangs love to kill people just so they can be in the news. Revolutionists/Extremists love to things to get attention to their cause. It is because the media covers only the bad things in the world. Look at all the new shows on TV lately: crime shows, reality shows that force people to do bad things, and evening soap opera stuff that has to have intriguing triangle scenerios to get your attention. Turn it off and look at the real reality that is in YOUR life: YOUR world.

It's all part of the capitalist society to exploit people and feel heartless and cold .
In the developed world it is a shame to see people who cannot afford health care, people who do not earn a living wage, homeless people, people who go hungry .Yet very few people seem to care.
