Puja literally means 'worship' which is the way Hindus offer their respect to God and pray. As others said it includes lighting of oil lamp before the diety and/or lighting incesnse sticks and finally offering a lighted camphor. Offering of fruits and flowers are also made as part of Puja. This is done both at the private puja rooms or altars of people at home and on a bigger scale in Temples. At home small bells are also rung and big bells are rung at the temples. The basic procedure is same for all Hindus though there could be slight regional or sectarian specificities and diversities.

Puja means prayer. Indians light a small oil lamp instead of using a candle. They light insence sticks too in front of gods/godesses photoes before praying. These help in concentration while praying every day. It is not carneval
