They don't. The cover their face with their gloves so that the opposing team can read their lips when talking with other players.

they dont smell them, they do three things....
1) when in a meeting at the mound they cover there mouths so that the other team cant read there lips, most of the time there talking about how to pitch to the upcoming batter...
2) the shortstop and second basemen put there gloves infront of there faces when there is a guy on first... what they do is communicate with eachother to whos going to cover second base if the runner on first tries to steal second.... if they yelled it the hitter would know which one was vacating and try and hit the ball where they were, so the shortstop usually makes the call and if he opens his mouth wide its like saying YOU and if he closes his mouth its like he's saying ME so the second basemen and shortstop will do the opposite so that they know who's covering and by covering there mouth the hitter doesnt know.... most the time the desicion is based on the hitter if he tend to hit towards right field a lot the shortstop will probably take it so that the second basemen will be there for the play, visa versa for someone who tends to hit to left field....
3) most gloves these days that kids buy come with oil in soaked into them so that they can loosen up, but when the pros get gloves they get them natural and have people loosen them up for them.... so they do two things, one some players put pinetar in there glove for a couple reasons, one they put it on the tips of the glove so if they cant reach a ball it could possibly catch the tar on the end and slow it down, they might put it inside there glove for two reasons, one so that the ball doesnt lsip around during the transition to there hand, or two if its raining it will make it harder to slip out, and the last reason to put tar in ut glove is so it sticks to the ball and gives the pitcher an advantage for the next pitch, and also for the fielder on that throw... so days its not raining they'll spit in the glove to lube up the tar and make it sticky again!!!

HOPE THAT SOLVES EVERYTHING!!! lata!!!

There's a steroid oil you can rub into the leather glove and inhaling it will help the player bulk up, not! It is like previously stated to prevent players from reading the other player's lips. The smell thing is just a bonus!

Like others have said, its not the smell, it's to prevent the other team from finding out the stratagy that you're talking about.
For example, In the WS Greg Maddux was pitching against the Giants and the camera distinctly saw him say 'fastball away'. The player then hit the next pitch out of the park because that was the pitch that her was sitting on.

Well some gloves actually smell good. But I would have to go with another guy, when its actually to cover their mouth, in case there is a wily lipreader, or if they are cursing up a storm, no one can "hear" what they are saying

What are you talking about.
They put the glove over their face so the other team can't read their lips.
