I was digging up some of my plants to bring in for the winter....

Was going to keep them under a light.....

but, when I opened the bag, I noticed that it wreaked of gasoline...

((we had a generator on the porch and a kid we knew tried to drain it while we were gone.... Needless to say it spilled out..... and the garden soil soaked it up)).......

The soil looks useable..... But, I'm almost afraid to use it....

What do you think?....

Should I use it?......

The soil gasoline should evaporate given time. Much of it is of low molecular weight. And some soil bacteria can beak down simple hyrocarbons. But that takes time especially of the weather is cold. In the meantime you will have to lay out the soiul in spot that does not introduce the odor into your house. In, for example a platic sheet in the garage. The odor shold dissipate over time and be usable.

Gasoline is extremely toxic to all plants and takes years to leave the soil. Buy some new soil. Trust me your plants will die with this soil.

No, I wouldn't! Just get some new soil and use the tainted soil as a land filler some where in your yard.

If it were me, I'd call the local HazMat disposal agency and ask them what to do to dispose of the contaminated soil. Dirt is, well, dirt cheap. Do your plants a favor and buy a new bag!
