I spent three weeks in a psychiatric hospital. They let me sleep for a couple of days but then after that I had to be up at 7:00 a.m. for breakfast and medication. After breakfast we had music therapy which consisted of listening and singing along and dancing (if we were brave enough) to a variety of music. We also had a 30 minute exercise session. Lunch was at 12:00 p.m. and was followed by medication. After lunch we did crafts. We also had a daily group therapy time. Dinner was at 5:00 p.m. Visitation was from 7:00 to 8;00 p.m. At 9:00 p.m. we had another round of medication and a bedtime snack. We were very tired by 10:00 p.m. when our meds kicked in, and everyone slept well. In between daily activities there was time to nap or just think. The first week was a well-deserved vacation. The second week was tolerable. The third week I was getting homesick and desperate.

Most people filled in the time by smoking. The guys watched sports. The ladies never got to control the remote. We also played alot of cards.

The food was fabulous! We had a great cafeteria where we could pick out our own food. The company left something to be desired. Many people were depressed and did not feel like talking much. I lived for visitation.

We had unlimited phone calls except during group time. We had a secret code that we gave to friends and family members that we wanted to speak to. No one else was allowed to call us or know about our condition.

The combination of rest and medication had me feeling like a whole new person in three weeks!

If you choose to enter rehab, be aware that the docs will try out many combinations of meds before finding what works for you. That process can be very frustrating and confusing. What makes it even worse is the fact that many of the meds are samples so you do not get the same size and shape pill each time. I started writing down every medication that they gave me. It helped me to make sense of it all.

It depends on which rehab and what rehab you go to. Recovery from Addictions....

Physical Rehabilitation....

My quess would be the more common rehab- drug and/or alcohol dependency. In that case, generally what people do is learn to live a happy, satisfying and rewarding life without the use of mood modifying substances.

Behaviour modification is what is taught. One would learn or re-learn responsible behaviour patterns. Learn to take reponsibililty for their actions, The one that I'm familiar with has a schedule that everyone adheres to. Wake up early in the AM, do your chores- a specific "job" that is assigned to you. Classes are held at certain times teaching about patterns of thinking, other things include learning to maintain a proper diet, etc...
