Why do we look up if we're trying to remember something.... or when we're thinking?

We look into our brains for the answer .

It goes with the direction of the lobes of the brain. For example, if you were trying to make up an answer you most likely look up and to the right because that is the creative part of your brain. I believe looking up and to the left means you are accessing your memory.

Because the person asking the question is looking straight into our eyes for the answer, and it's distracting, so you look off (not really looking at anything inparticular) so you can 'think'.
