coming from my personal experience, i harmed myself because of the intensity of pressures that was being loaded on me. my college teacher found out and she made a visit to my house the very same evening. she did call to tell me she was coming to see my parents. but i declined. i did not want her to tell my parents; not because i was afraid but because i did not want the whole world to have to know what i am going through.

she came anyway. and made my problems worst. i was disappointed. it may sound so morally correct to want to intervene. but i feel that as a teacher who wants to help should reach out to the student first. talk to the student, find out what her problems are and discuss options with her. taking her to a counselor should be a choice she makes because she wants to help herself.

as in with just about any problem in life, no one else can solve it for you. you have to solve it for yourself. it may seem ethically appropriate, but on a truly human level, it just isnt so.

Yes, all public school teachers and most private school teachers are required by law to sign a document making them a "mandated reporter". This means that anything that a teacher hears or senses must be reported to the Department of Children and Family Services(DCFS). If a student wants to have a confidential conversation that does not apply to the mandated reported laws, then they must choose to speak with a counselor or school psychologist. Teachers can be punished(suspended, fired, sued) if they learn information that they do not pass along to the appropriate authorities.

yup. because self-harming may be a sign of being suicidal. They changed the laws so that teachers have to report if they even suspect that a student is thinking of harming themselves, harming others, or is being harmed by others. So now it's a liability issue and any threat of harm must be taken seriously.

Yes, I remember in our high school teachers would say we could talk to them and we could count on our conversation remaining confidential unless we were talking about harming ourselves, because they were required by law to tell someone. Also, I used to be a counselor at the YMCA and kids could talk to us, but if they ever said anything about harming themselves, we had to report it. Hope this helps. Also different schools may have different rules, I also think it would be a good idea for you to read that school's policy (if it's a particular school).

Definitely.

Anything a student reveals that causes harm to themselves or another, or shows that they are being harmed (abuse, self or from someone else) must be resported. Check with your principal (or instructor if you are still in school yourself) for details.

Very simply - YES. Failure to do so could open the teacher up to personal liability. School districts should inform their employees of this.

MOST do not get involved.. Most do not bother.. Most are perhaps aware of a situatin and SHOULD notify a counselor of the concerns but it is not stipulated by law
