I am 21 and would like to go to the gynocologist. I'm a virgin and don't know how comfortable I feel about the idea of the speculum and all that. I still have to use "slender" tampons and I'm worried that the instruments/fingers used in the exam will hurt or tear me in a painful way. Anyone have any experience similar to this? Can I get a pap without the full-on pelvic work up? Any advice would be helpful!

I went to the gyno when i was a virgin. I don't remember it being any more or less painful or uncomfortable then it is now.

The first thing you need to do is relax.
In most cases you doctor will have a range of different sized speculum's in order for it to be as comfortable as possible. Another thing you need to do Is to speak to some of your girl or women friends to find out who they go to and if they are happy with their doctor. Do some research on the subject and be sure and tell your doctor that you're a virgin and nervous. They will take care of you better if you are open and honest about your fears or worries. here is a link to a site to help you understand exactly what will happen when you get your first pap smear.

It is very important for you to get the full exam as it is part of keeping yourself healthy.

When I first went to the gyno, I was a virgin. You just have to let them know that you are and ask them to be careful. I've always been to female doctors, I think they have a lighter touch, and while it has been uncomfortable, it has never been painful. The pap is the worst part...the rest of the exam is fine.

I will probably get slammed for this because of the gender bias in my answer but here goes anyway- find a female ob/gyn..maybe one reccomened by a trusted friend and call her office or talk to her directly- tell her your concerns and what you just told us. ask her your question- if you don't like the answer or don't feel comfortable then find another doc that you do feel comfortable with and do the same..best of luck to you.

Just get your legs into the stirrups and spread. Quit your complaining and deal with it.
