Are they used to cover hairs when you haven't shaved in awhile? Does it do a good job at it? Perhaps they make you a tad warmer? Just kinda at a loss I guess.

Up to as recently as a generation ago, it was considered poor taste for a lady to go to work or church or to a dressy social function with bare legs. Pantyhose were used to give the appearance of bare legs, without actually showing the skin.

Now days, I suppose pantyhose are used for the same reason, but also to hide skin imperfections, stubble or when bare skin isn't acceptable for the occasion. Also, I hear all the best convenience store robbers are wearing them (on their heads, of course).

I use pantyhose to filter the lumps out of paint. Seriously though, in the old days women wore nylon hose (and before that, silk) for all the reasons that have been mentioned here. Looks, warmth and probably not feeling so naked under a dress. They covered just the legs - think really long stockings only sheer. To hold them up they wore garter belts above their panties which fastened around the waist and had four elastic strips hanging from them with metal clips on the ends for holding up the hose. Think suspenders. This apparatus must have been uncomfortable as H**L. Some time in the '50's some bright fashion designer came up with panties and hose in one. The logical name? Pantyhose. I'm sure women have thanked him or her ever since.

What Are Pantyhose For

I use them for all manner of things.

Excellent filter for the washing machine effulant. What you do is take one of the legs off a pair of panty hose and then zip tie it off onto the washing machine discharge hose. This keeps all the lint from going down the drain in the deep sink. Less deep sink maintance.

Sepperating small parts suspended in an oil bath. At work on occation I have too soak a mess of these itty bitty machine parts in light oil. When I need too fish them out I just pour the oil thru the leg of the panty hose and SHAZZAM! They are seperated without me having too fish around in the bottom of the tub for them.

Drying cottage cheese out. I'm not going too tell you WHY I would want too dry out cottage cheese. I'm just going too tell you how. Pile up your cheese down in the bottom of the panty hose leg. Wander out the back yard and spin it above your head for a good ten minutes. You sepperate out all the whey right quick! It beats every other meathod I've tried accept for pressing it. But when you press it it gets all clumpy and that's not good.

Excellent gar bait. You take a strip of the nylon and a little bit of bacon and put it on your hook. Then draw that slowly thru your gar territory. Never fails.

Great temporary pipe hanger. When you are installing over head sprinkler systems and you are mapping out where too put your pipe hangers you get a few industrial magnets and secure the piping at the right hight from them. That lets you go thru and scribe out the pattern for the hangers. There are a bunch of specific tools for just this job but the don't work half as well as panty hose and they are VASTLY more expensive.

Sifting mateiral out of oil. Ok... Same as above but this time I'm using it too filter out the gunk and mettal fragments from sump oil so that I can discover what parts are wearing and why. It's gets a little CSI. (That's it! I'm buying a white lab coat tomorrow!)

Temporary fan belt. More than one occation have I used panty hose in this application. Works a treat!

Spin dry lettus or any leafy veg for that matter. Same proceedure as drying cottage cheese.

I could go on but... I won't.

Hope this helps.

There are alot of different reasons really. One, for support, meaning helps the legs not tire and cause vericose veins. The other it is considered more business like. But, I think as time goes on we are seeing less and less of pantyhose. Bare legs are becoming more of the sign of the times.

in an air-cond place it keeps the legs warmer if the office frowns on pants. Otherwise panty hose can be used to give a sheer no vpl look on tight fitting clothes.
