I have to agree that a comedic take on GL would NOT have been a good idea, at least not for a first outing. I do hope that someone does present a better script for a GL movie and that it does go through...personally I think Jack Black would ahve been better suited to play Blue Beetle. As for GL...IF they follow the original story line and start with Hal Jordan then maybe someone like Heath Ledger...

Jack Black would have destroyed any hope for a Green Lantern film to do anything at the box office. GL isn't a comedy, it is an action packed series with little to no humor. All the GL's lack a little thing called humor except Kyle Rayner, he has a little bit of comedic flare but not enough to warrant a comedian to play the role.
The movie should probably be based on Hal Jordan, easily the most popular Green Lantern, but it should have appearances by other GL's at some point during the movie.

Jack Black would have been totally inappropriate as Green Lantern. Granted, there have been some less-than-serious GL's (G'norrt and Guy Gardner come to mind, but they were played for comedy because the Justice-League-International and -Europe titles were dumping grounds for unpopular characters.)
But Hal Jordan, the original (modern era) GL, was so serious that he face would crack if he ever smiled. (I think they characterized his will power as grimness.) That is the image most people have of him, sleek, almost infallible, under tremendous pressure, unflappable in the face of danger, cool, collected, relentless in his determination against evil, one who took his oath of office very very seriously.
I think that the GL character should be played up for the movies as a modern knight errant almost (not to borrow on the Jedi Knights, however!): a man with a mission imposed on him from above and responsible enough to do his best to live up to what was entrusted to him. There is tremendous nobility there, and a crushing sense of responsibility whenever events proved beyond his ability to correct (indeed, that's why he went wrong at the end there, because he couldn't face up to his limitations as a finite mortal.)
There are so many moral images that the Green Lantern conjures up. Imagine, if you can, a man who DARES NOT lose his temper, because the slightest anger or wish for retaliation would be immediately translated into action by his Power Ring! To keep himself from becoming a villain, Green Lantern must be patient, kind, forgiving, unselfish, etc, etc. Those are the qualities of a noble person, those are the qualities of a hero, those are the qualitites that would bring people back for sequels and would make us all want to be like that ourselves.
THAT'S how they should portray Green Lantern!

I didn't know about this. But now that I'm reading it, I'm very glad they shelved it. I agree with everyone else. This would not have done well at all and would probably have killed any chance for future GL movies that tell the real story which I really like to see. How could anyone have come up with an idea like this and think that it would go over well with the public.

I think it is good that WB decided to shelve that idea. I love Jack Black, but not as GL. I think that Jack would make a good Flash though. I know he doesn't fit the physical build of the Flash, but he plays a great endearing jerk which is how the Flash comes off as. I just can't wait to see what Joss Wheadon does with Wonder Woman.

Thank the LORD! I like GL way too much for his movie to be made into a Jack Black comedy. The only way they could do that was if they used G'Nort. And G'Nort sucks.
Why wouldn't they give Green Lantern the star treatment that he deserves?! Make it a space epic... Make it a gritty hero movies... anything but a comedy....
