First: Go to My Documents and go through old pictures and files you no longer need.
Second: Go to Start/Control Panel/ Add or Remove Programs and look through the list to see anything that you no longer need... ie, programs you once downloaded that you don't use. Or, games you no longer play. If your not certain, remember the program and write it down.
Third: Open internet explorer and click on tools, click Internet Options and click Delete files. Once that box opens, check the box that says to Delete All Offline Content, click Ok.
Fourth: Go to Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Cleanup Let that run. It frees up a few megs.
Fifth: Go to Start/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/Disk Defragmenter. Let that run over night.

you can start off with a program like CCLeaner: http://www.download.com/CCleaner/3000-2144_4-10592746.html?tag=lst-3-4
"CCleaner (Crap Cleaner) is a system-optimization tool. It removes unused and temporary files from your system, allowing it to run faster and more efficiently, and giving you more hard-disk space. The application cleans traces left by Windows, Internet Explorer, and third-party applications. Version 1.33.382 includes more cleaning supports for a variety of new third-party applications."
Also check your My Music / My Video folders (or other music or video folders you have) for any unnecessary files. Media files usually take up much more space than documents.
Also go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs
and remove any unnecessary software.
If you have a cd/dvd burner back up files onto disks.

How much space are you looking to free up? If you are talking about disk space of the GB range, it is not quite possible. However, to free up some space (a few MB), you can zip up your unused file using winzip and archive them in some folder.

Open "My Computer" then right click on "local drive C:" and select "properties." There will be a pie on that page and right below and to the right it will have a button that says "disk cleanup." That will help a lot.
Good Luck

Goto start/settings/control panel/add remove programs
remove programs you don't need.
Then do a disk cleanup.
Start/programs/accessories/system tools/disk cleanup
Check all boxes except for compressed old files.
This should help.
