I would try a commercially available vegitation killer, like TRILOX. make sure you apply it liberally to activley growing parts of the tree. You can also drill a hole into the trunk at a downward angle and fill it up. But be careful this stuff kills any plant it come in contact with.

" GOOD LUCK"
I was a Grad. Student at CSU Chico CA. in Plant & Soil Sciences.
The Professors were begging Grad.students to make killing the Chinese Tree of Haven their thesis. These trees are over taking all of our streams causing the native plants to die. I have only heard one man say (Landscaper for a living) that he has been successful killing the trunks. He stated that he would drill deep holes in the trunk and put Round Up (NOT MIXED WITH WATER) in the holes. He said it works but you must place the Round Up in the holes several times AND BE VERY PATIENT;I would think the time of the year would affect this process. The hotter the better!

When the Chinese men came to Chico CA., to work they were very lonely and yearned for something they could have here to remind them of their Mother Country. Sadly, friends or family member brought the seeds that are destroying our parks, streams even our landscapes at our homes.
I will be trying this method myself within a week or so. I too hope it works!
" THEY STINK SO MUCH!"
