what are you hitting to make it take they key? the ignition cylinder (where the key goes and turns?)
if so, you need a new ignition lock cylinder, before it won't turn at all. this is common for older focus, up to about 2003/2004
i'm not sure on exact cost, but i know it will be more if the cylinder ceizes up, and you have to have it towed and the cylinder drilled out.
bring it to a ford dealer

you could have several differant prob,First thing you should check the ground from batt to body, check positive lead from batt to starter, make shure all contacts are free of any rust or corrosion. If you have a remote mounted solenoid clean all those connections.I think that model of car has a starter mounted solenoid though.I't could be a starter switch, which is located in the lower end of your steering coulmn, has nothing to do w/your key tumbler.could use more info.It sounds like a bad solenoid to me.email me @45hyshok.sbcglobal.net with more info if you get stuck.Im an ASE certified master mech, have been doing this for over 25 yrs, hope I could help.good luck!
