Best AVs on the market (as an IT and digital arts teacher, have given most a run for their money)
Free - AVG (better than many paid-for AV's)
Paid-for: Symantec Corporate (is available to anyone via their website). Although Symantec's Norton range is nothing short of bloat-ware, the corporate range is incredible streamlined (very lite to run) and far more powerful than anything else suggested here.

Avoid BitDefender like the plague - is worse than Norton (if that's even possible) for killing your system, and is the worst rated of all the big-guns

anti virus programs need to be running constantly to be effective. Basically they filter almost all activities performed on a PC. Some antivirus run a preliminary scan and tag the PC as healthy and only filters incoming traffic. Some others like norton are have low faith and are always scanning everything you touch. I have used a lot of antiviruses and among the trusted brands I Recommend Mcafee.

I would like to recommend you NOD 32. Simple interface. Lite weight files loaded. Virus Database update frequency : High
I also heard that, Microsoft was using that previously. Take a look at av-comparitives.org and the survey there. You will find the majority going for NOD32.

Any additional program that you add to your computer will take some speed away. Better known as adding another process.
Try to disable the software and run it when needed.
You can do this through start/run/msconfig and select your settings. For more info, let me know.
