As a mother of three I can see why she is trying to make the child stay up during the day. One years seams young, but who gave her the advice? Her doctor? You did not tell us this......
The child will not have to stay up to many days to sleep at night. For those who do not have kids it might sound horible...then one has kids..... and the light turns ON.

As you phrase this I would say it is not normal or a good idea.

Little kids need a fair amount of rest. They should have a nap in the afternoon. Then they should be allowed to stay up until bed-time, which should normally be somewhere around 8-9 p.m.

They should not be allowed to sleep too much during the day or they will be up a lot at night. For sleeping through the night the best thing is activity. Play time, a bed-time story, maybe take them outside for a walk or to build a snowman or whatever. Even a one-year-old can handle a certain amount of this.

The important thing is to set them on a pattern of sleeping nights and being active days. Keeping any small child up all day is probably not particularly healthy for them.

Letting them have a nap also gives mom and dad a little bit of a rest from them.

That all depends on the child and parent. I personally feel children 5 and under should have some type of rest time in the early afternoon. There are less "cranky times" when this is done. Even if it is laying down and watching a Disney Movie, then it is better on all. Even 30 min is enough.
I could see if the child was 3-4-or 5, I think that a 1 yr old really needs the down time, it also helps with development.
If your friend is having problems with getting the child asleep, you might give her some advise about the child's diet. Sugars and Carbs will keep a child from getting to bed on time.
I hope this helps, good luck with your friend....

Wow, I read that wrong. I thought the baby was staying awake on his own. No way should a parent force a 1 year old to stay awake. By 1, the child should be getting close to sleeping through the night anyway, even with a nap.

I think this behaviour would be close to abuse. A 1 year old should be sleeping about 14 - 15 hours per day. 12 at night and the rest during day. Keeping a child awake is cruel.
Children who don't get enough sleep can have poor growth, delayed learning and behavioural problems.
Give her a parenting book!

Well, your friend knows her baby better than you or anyone on this board does. If it works, don't criticize her. That being said, I have never heard of a one year old who didn't need a nap and still was able to sleep through the night. My five month old takes 3 naps a day and still sleeps 12 hours at night!

This is wrong. If she is having to force the child to stay awake then the child is obviously tired. If the child is tired then he should sleep! What's wrong with just letting the child have a nap? This sounds incredibly selfish!

No - No -No - I feel that is mean. How do you feel when you are sleepy? Right So if you want the child to sleep all nite . Feed them a nice hot meal . I use oatmeal or cream of wheat. Then I feed my daughter about an hour or so before bedtime- then after I feed her, then I give her a nice warm bath. So by the time you do all this . he or she will be out for the nite. My child is 20 months old. & I have 5 kids - this works very we for me.
Good luck !!!!

no kids need naps at that age. If you are having trouble with getting them to sleep try giving them naps early in the day. Make sure that they are on a schedule. Kids at that age do better if they have structure in their life. If you are still having trouble getting them to sleep at night try giving them short naps in the day. Sometimes if a child is allowed to sleep to long in the day they aren't tired enough to sleep at night. You can try letting them sleep an hour at a time until you figure out how long they can sleep in the daytime to still go to sleep at night. You just have to experiment until you get to a point where they can sleep in the day as well as night. Proper sleep is important. Too much sleep in the daytime causes them not to sleep in the night. Not enough sleep in the day and night causes them to be sleep deprived and cranky and irritable. Hope this helps!!

NO! The signs that authority's look for in child abuse are:
Not allowing the child to eat when hungry or sleep when tired. Along with a few other guidelines these are at the top of the list!

No. Just like adults they need to be able to have time to dream and for their brains to assimilate all that they have seen that day. A small child is getting new information from all five senses all day long. Because, unlike adults, EVERYTHING is new, their brains need more "downtime". If you are lying the child down, give them a book or two to look at. If they fall asleep, it's because they NEED to fall asleep. If not, an hour or so of quite is good for them.
