I have recently been approached to join both societies on account of my IQ of 170+(178 to be exact) and yes it was legit. I have taken stanford binet and welscher and scored high on both averageing a 178. Staying on subject, what are the benefits and are there any negatives?

I have not joined any "high IQ" societies, although I too qualify for the 99.9 percentile societies such as Triple Nine, International Society for Philosophical Enquiry (ISPE), etc. (I'm not famiar with Vertex.) I have avoided joining because it has always seemed to me to be an ego thing -- i.e., people join to validate their own intelligence and to generally feel elitist and superior. But I've been looking into it more lately, and I think there are some definite benefits -- primarily, the opportunity to interact with other really smart people through online forums, newsletters, etc., to get some intellectual stimulation that may be hard to get elsewhere and possibly to apply your collective talents towards addressing some of society's ills. The only negative I can see is the "elitist" stigma that may be associated with membership in such a society.
