okay, I have been lifting weights, running routes on the football field and playing tennis very often this past summer and have had no problems with my back. I played basketball today for the first time in a while and my back is killing me, and I felt fine while playing. Anyone else have this sort of issue?

You might need to start stretching before you do anything physically active to keep from injuring yourself any further and for the future. Also, it is probally just that you were using muscles that you have not used in a while and as a result they are letting you know that they are still alive. Try taking aleve or something along those lines for the pain and a hot bath or hot shower with the water on your back will help too in the meantime to work out the soreness.

If you become inactive for a while, your body adjusts to being sedentary and any new or newly renewed activity stresses it at first. You can reduce the stress activity causes by stretching well before and after doing anything strenuous. The reason you felt fine while playing is because your muscles were warm and the blood was flowing through the muscles. The lactic acid building up in your muscles accumulates more once you have cooled down. Take a hot shower and have someone massage your lower back if you can get someone. An analgesic cream or heating pad might make it feel better too. Your body gets used to activity again fairly easily. Just warm up and stretch before you do. It's better for you anyway. :)

Do you do anything with tires like they do in Army pretraining classes, like run with one foot in the hole of the tire? Not sure if you've seen the obstacle course on tv shows or not, but I'm betting it's that sort of movement, the dribbling, legs bent, moving side to side movement that got you. Try something like mineral ice rubbed in to cool the muscles. Use a cold pack if it's within 24 hours of playing, then tomorrow or after 24 hours use moist heat. Lay with a towel rolled up on your back at waist level too when you go to bed and sleep with it between your legs if you are a side sleeper, that will take pressure off the muscles so it can try to heal. If you can have someone massage your back that would help too. You need to rest it up tomm, don't do anything strenous. Take motrin (advil) for it, you can take 4 200's equalling 800mg, 3 times a day but only short term as it get the stomach pretty bad more than that, I'd say 2 days max, if nothing feels better on the 3rd day see your doctor.

I've been seriously involved with bicycling long distances. I was experiencing some serious back pain and I was shocked to find out it was diet related. A lack of nutrients from vegetables, especially the green leafy kind had caused me to lose bone density in my spine, which caused all sorts of muscle problems (as my muscles had to do more work to support my body). I doubt that is your problem, but if your diet has changed recently it is something to consider.

sounds like basketball is not your cup of tea!
you didn't say where it hurt. I would think you used muscles you never used before, but with all your other activity, I wouldn't think that would be the case, maybe you are over done it.
