I am a native born New York City guy, I am 20 yrs old. My parents are thinking about moving to Vancouver and I was a little worried if I would be happy. I did some searching and Vancouver came up as one of the best cities to live in. Thats good.

But there is so much going on in NYC that you never get bored, there are so many people, so many new places. I wonder if the clubbing scene will be as fun as it is in NYC. These are all questions that worry me.

I will be safer in Vancouver, its cleaner, nicer people, great outdoors. I just dont want to feel that feeling I get after a while of being in the Suburbs. Its great but after a while I need my Time Square fix, lights and buzz.

What you might miss out on with what you could perceive as fewer clubs you will gain back and thensome with other things you simply can't find in New York. New York for example doesn't have sandy ocean beaches right in downtown where there's tons going on like sandcourt volleyball tournaments, beer gardens, etc.

Downtown Vancouver, like Manhattan is alive with people all night long. Vancouver (it is a fact) has the fastest growing downtown core of any city in North America. Why? Its exciting at night! People want to be there! Its the reason why it costs 3/4s of a million dollars for a nicer 2 bedroom condo IF you're lucky enough to beat the crowds lined up around the block looking to buy one as well. There's rarely any second looks in Vancouver. They just can't build buildings fast enough in Vancouver. Demmand is huge. Plus you just can't beat the weed... nor the women of Kitsilano where I lived for nine years.

Vancouver is SO not like NYC. It's very quiet and you hardly EVER see people on the streets, except in the downtown area. But otherwise, Vancouver is a great city to live in and the best thing about Vancouver is the climate (except during winter, when it rains a lot). And did you know Vancouver was rated the best city to live in during the beginning of 2006? I saw it on the news! It's also very clean and full of nice people and very gay friendly! (there's actually a gay village down at West End; i found out recently on Wikipedia) To go somewhere busy, Metrotown shopping center is THE place! It's the largest shopping center in BC Canada and there are hundreds of stores. it has literally transformed into the second largest urban area in BC (largest is Downtown Vancouver!) It also has the largest food court in western Canada and a great theatre! But if you really want to move to Vancouver, be careful about the housing prices--it has grown A LOT in the last few years. If you don't have a somewhat large income, or someone else who you can borrow money from that has a large income, there's little chance that you can actually afford a house in Vancouver right now (apartments are cheaper though). It's better to buy a house in Burnaby or New Westminster right now because it's not that expensive yet. I'd advise you not to live in Surrey right now though because there's been a lot of crime happening there lately.

Granted, Vancouver isn't a huge metro with all the lights and sounds in NYC, but it's a great city to live in. The air is cleaner, people are MUCH friendlier and nicer, and the aura is just fantastic. If you're in it for the concerts, clubbing and nightlife...Vancouver is okay in that, but NOTHING like you would have in New York. But in the daytime, Vancouver is fantastic. Because it's so natural, there isn't much city and a lot more trees, ocean and parks. You're very close to many ski mountains, Stanley park is a beautiful place to run, bike, play sports or just hang out. You can go kayaking, sailing or rowing right in the city. It's great for naturists and adventurous people, the outdoorsy type, but I've been to New York, and if you're all about the hustle and bustle, crazy New York Minute type stuff...it's too mellow of a city for you. I know the change from London to Vancouver was drastic for me, as London is such a fast-paced place, but you'll notice Vancouver is more relaxing, care-free and calming, and it's a beautiful place to live.

Nobody can tell you if you will be happy so don't count on that.
Hopefully people will tell you more about the community of Vancouver but you wont know about "happy" until you have been living there for a least 6 months.
Actually, it is a nice enough City and has many different cultures. Canadians, Chinese, British plus out gays and just like New York - down and outs on every corner! Great nightclubs and mild weather for a City in Canada.
What is different is the wonderful location beside the ocean. The lack of crime in comparison to a US City and the friendliness of the people.
Keep an open mind while you discover probably the most popular City in western Canada.
Cheers!

Vancouver isn't like NYC. The clubs and nightlife suck. There is crime if you go to the east side where all the junkies and panhandlers hang out to make you feel at home. Other than that the city is pretty clean and there are lots of outdoor activities to do when its not raining. The realestate is overpriced and overrated like NYC but the city is filled with a whole pile of granola hippy yuppie nimby types that think Vancouver is so great when its not. But I like the country. Had enough of city living.

The question is " Do you WANT to be happy in Vancouver?" All the ingredients will be there for you, but ultimately it will be your choice and your decision ....It is a great city, it is beautiful....And there is so much more to life than clubbing....which I am sure will be ok in Vancouver as well , but think ocean, beaches, Whistler, skiing, clean air, great people.... It might be another way of life for you, but just as great if you keep your mind open and don't look for EXACTLY the same thing as in the Big Apple...
Take it as an adventure, a new chapter in your life, and go for it!
Good luck!

Vancouver is no NYC - that is for sure! You might like it here but you may be bored. No, the club scene is nothing like NYC AT ALL! However, it is beautiful and friendly and there are lots of things to do.

Well, I have to ask why - at 20 years old - do you feel you have to move with your parents? Are you not working to pay for that night life you crave? If so, and you enjoy it so much - stay put. Cause Canada needs skilled workers.
