x + y = 85
x - y = 45
Add similar terms

2x + 0 y = 130
x = 65
go to the equation x + y = 85
substitute
65+ y = 85
y = 20

x + y = 85
x - y = 45
------------------ - substract the bigger one
2y = 40
y = 40/2
y = 20


or
x + y = 85
x - y = 45
------------------ + add both
2x = 130
x = 130/2
x = 65

proof it.
65 + 20 = 85
65 - 20 = 45

2x=85+45
2x=130
x=65
put value in equation (1)
65+y=85
y=20

add the equations, and then you'll figure it out. after you have added the equations, plug in what you got for the variable into the other equation, and then you will have your answer1
