Large circular spots (usually larger then 6" in dia): Fungus.
Solution: use a lawn fungicidal spray. These patches may take some time to come back.

Small circular spots (usually 6" dia or smaller): Pet urine.
Solution: flood the area with water.

Erratic patches: Grubs or Fungus. An easy way to determine whether it is lawn grubs or not is to pull on the grass in the effected areas. If it comes up easily then it is most likely Grubs. If not, then you probably have a fungus. Fungi are often visible by the naked eye on the blades of grass showing up as little brown or black spots or white "flecking".
Solution: Grubs - use a good granular pesticide (make sure it targets grubs as some pesticides do not penetrate deep enough) directly after you mow your lawn and water in thoroughly. Fungus - see top.

A pet running around in the yard is probably the source. Also there could be destructive insects on the job.
For more information look up St Augustine grass and the maintenance of it on Google.

Have you been fertilizing the lawn? Too much fertilizer concentrated in one spot will cause the lawn to burn. So will dog urine (female, mostly) and feces. You may also have a type of fungus. check with a horticulturalist.
