Detachment and isolation are big recurring themes in Woolf's work. She sets many of her novels around social events - parties, house parties, social gatherings etc... because in this way she can highlight characters' essential detachment and their struggle with personal isolation despite their supposedly inclusive social setting.

The past and its relation to the present is also something Woolf was very interested in and this is always demonstrated in her character's stream of consciousness style which jumps between their memories and their current experiences.

She was also very infatuated with death, I learned that in my English Class because my professor made us read "death of the moth" and we went into a very deep conversation on her, if I remember correctly she committed suicide.
