If you use www.mapquest.com to search how to get somewhere, it gives you a mad from your starting point (from) to your destination (to). It also gives you the option of choosing whether or not you want to use major highways, and since other roads are shown on the map you can choose to take a different route. At the very least, you can use it as a starting point for finding more detailed maps of your From/To areas.

Also, AAA.com; If you have time, you can write the travel bureaus/chambers of commerce/or visitor centers in each state that you want maps for (they will send). If you are traveling by car on Interstates, every state has a vistor center near the border of each highway that has maps, too. And helpful volunteers to suggest directions, sights to see, etc.
