I think many MANY people cheat themselves out of the life they deserve because they've spent years of convincing themselves, or having others telling them, that they don't deserve better than what they have. These people don't put out any effort to gain a better life because they truely don't think their efforts would bring forth any results.
Or, perhaps, they have had events take place in their life, and experiences, that have left them cynical and bitter. They may believe that these negative experiences are a reflection of all life. Based on this they have come to the conclusion that this "better" life that they "deserve" is really a crock of ***. So...they never even attempt to make their existence more pleasant.

Either way, whether they don't believe it's worth trying to get something you don't deserve, or simply ridiculous to strive for something that isn't real, I think a very FEW people ever are actively aware that they are cheating themselves out of life.

Because they're so wrapped up in the future or the past, they forget to cease the day. And tomorrows sometimes never come.
