I am an MD. During the normal female monthly menstrual cycle, ovulation typically occurs on or about the 14th day of the cycle. After this occurs, there is progesterone secreted by the corpus luteum, which lasts about 12 days, (unless there is a pregnancy present), after which it involutes (self destructs) causing progesterone levels to drop to zero which then causes sloughing of the uterine lining and this starts a new cycle.
If pregnacy occurs, then the corpus luteum remains intact, and progesterone levels remain high, which keeps the uterine lining healthy and has the added benefit of supressing further ovulation. (you wouldn't want any new little younger brothers or sisters coming down the fallopian tubes while you were still in the womb, would you? It could get kind of too crouded in there, to say the least. )
Progesterone in birth control pills provides a continual level of progesterone, which causes a "fake" state of pregnancy, which supresses ovulation. You can't get pregnant if you can't make eggs. That is it in a nutshell. It supresses ovulation.

You are creating a hormonal pseudo pregnancy where you cannot ovulate (but where you can get STD's).
