I think nightmares fall into many difference categories. I would like to consider three.

1) There are ones in which you're afraid of something that makes no sense to be afraid of when you're awake. Let's say you dream of being chased by a snake.

I think the solution to this is to face your fear. Have someone slowly and carefully teach you how to hold and care for snakes.

2) The next is a fear that continue to frighten you when you're awake. Let's say you're living in Iraq and there is a lot of trauma around you.

I think the solution to this is to find a way out. You have to get away. You don't have control over the situation so you can't rid your environment of the causes of your fear.

3) The final one is the hardest to define. You dream of something that frightens you when you're awake but isn't something that you can escape because it is a part of you. Let's say you fear that you will hurt someone.

This one requires help from a professional.

I think there are many other kinds of nightmares and reasons for having them. In general, I think you should seek professional help just to be on the safe side.

Years ago I'd have nightmares every night for four years I feel your pain. Dreams tell you what you are not facing in the waking world. once you find out the symbols of your dreams then you will find out what you are trying to tell yourself. Trust me Believe me I know. I was married to a man I didn't know I hated and paid it with four years of nightmares so bad and so real I'd wake up screaming and crying more than once a night. Four years until I learn my symbols and figured out my dreams. after I filed for a divorce I didn't have another nightmare for years tell me your dreams I only hope to help

Dreams usually relate to your life sometimes in indirect ways. You probably have something troubling you or something that causes a lot of stress in your life. Eliminate this and you should have a nice nights rest.

They're all in your head . Forget about them .Chances are you won't remember them if you don't give them a thought when you wake up ; and don't mention them to others . Eating close to bedtime will make you dream . Look at your habits before bedtime and find out what you need to do differently before going to bed . By the way ...do you play a lot of video games ? ? If so -cool it awhile .
