The core formed when the earth formed. About 4.5-5 billion years ago, the Earth was a big ball of molten material (i.g. magma). The heavier elements (eg iron and nickel), sunk to the center of the molten Earth-blob and as the planet cooled, stayed there and formed the core. I don't really know if there are any advantages/disadvantages to having a core.

It is believed that early in the Earth's history the entire planet was molten. When it started cooling it is speculated that the core mantle boundary was established and that would be how the core was "created". The advantage of having it is that since the core created a magnetic field it shields the Earth from harmful electro-magnetic radiation from the sun. Without it all life on the surface of this planet would be destroyed by that radiation.

Something to do with earth's magnetism and ozone if you've ever seen the movie "The Core" are the advantages. Disadvantages would probably be the natural radiation, but I believe we've adapted to it as we have to cosmic radiation. No real worries.

What "greenfis" said, plus this, the molten liquid core helps to keep the earth balanced.

It was created By God.
God made everything PERFECT!
He even placed the Earth in the PERFECT place in the sky. If it were just a bit closer to the sun, we would burn up. If it were just a bit farther away from the sun, we would freeze.
So this "BILLIONS of years" stuff is just a bunch of CRAP!
He created the Earth and all that is in it appx. 6000-7000 years ago. Read Genesis.

The earth is only 6000 years old?
Human beings had domesticated the dog by 10,000 years ago, ask any archaeologist!
