1. I am probably the best person to answer this question .
I became homeless when they tore my apartment down with my child and husband but we were young and couldn't make enough money to pay for a new type apartment they gave us a month to move out and no compensation .which was not enough to pay for a new apartment.. Its just a downward spiral
Currently being took over by an eminent domain act My manufactured home park is being closed and it takes 18,000 to move a home. storage and stay in a hotel.

If I had to guess I would say

1. Drug Abuse
2. Lack of family/friends
3. Mental issues, lack of support, resources
4. Unemployment, Lack of education/experience
5. Apathy/Lack of concern about themselves, their future

But it's tough because a lot of these things all go together. If you're unemployed you may turn to drugs, which may cause mental instability..
Or if you're have mental issues you may not be able to gain employment so you may become apathetic
Or if you don't have friends you may turn to drugs which makes you lose your job ...
You get the picture..

1.Natural disasters: Many people lose their homes to any variety of natural catastrophes including but not limited to: floods, forest fires, storms, and earthquakes. In 2005 hurricanes Katrina and Rita displaced over 1 million Americans. Tornadoes destroyed entire towns in Tennessee in 2006.
2.Unexpected emergencies: A variety of people find themselves unable to cope with any number of the following sudden tragedies: being laid off from a long-term place of employment;
losing their place of residence to an accidental fire; serious bodily injuries; discovery of terminal illnesses or diseases; loss of family member(s). These situations usually result not only in significant monetary expenses, but also in severe psychological and emotional hardships.
3.Institutional release. Most individuals being discharged from prison have few resources to “get back on their feet” and have eroded personal contacts that may provide support. Youths who “age out” of systems such as foster care often find themselves without needed support networks.
4.Many people (especially women and often with children) who flee from domestic violence oftentimes must quickly adapt to massive life changes. Many find it extremely difficult to secure a new place of residence and/or a job.
5.Co-occurring disorders. Individuals with co-occurring mental illnesses and substance use disorders are among the most susceptible to the above mentioned loses.

Mental Illness is the leading cause of homelessness. A couple more would be loss of employment, divorce, single parenthood, & drug abuse.
