I live in a very old house in the Quad City area in Illinois that was abandoned for 20 years. It was recently bought and fixed up. I want to know who lived here and what happened to them that nothing was done to the house for 20 years. Any suggestions where to look?

Have a title search done and request a chain of title back however many years you want. Depending on how tract records are kept in your area, you should at least be able to find out the last 30 to 40 years and potentially much further back. If it is a very old house and you are looking for info from the turn of the century, contact your local library or historical society.

Check the land records, which are probably kept by the county clerk.

Take the current owner's name, whether that's you or your landlord, and trace that backward in the Grantee Index and find who sold it to them. Repeat until you find what you want to know. It can be interesting work.

This is an easy one, simply write down the address and call or go by your local tax assessors office. Give them the address and they will be able to give you the information you are seeking.

Glad I could help!
