I've read that the average age is around twelve and a half, but there is no real "normal age." I got mine when I was eleven and I've had friends who go there's as young as eight and as old as sixteen.

Every generation of girls gets their periods a little earlier than the generations before them because of the growth hormones in the foods we eat and the general nutrition we recieve. There's a good chance that your daughter may still be a young girl when she gets her first period.

Kids can start their period as young as 11, or younger. Some don't start until they are in their middle teens.

You need to go to the library and get a book to discuss with your daughter about menses and bodily changes. Try the book My Body My Own.

I was 12 1/2 when mine started. I think between 12-14 is the norm. There are girls starting their cycles really early nowadays, though, so tell your daughter to pack a couple super-thin pads for school so she isn't caught by surprise when it starts.
